Building Community Resilience on the Oregon Coast

WHAT IS HAPPENING?
The Oregon Coastal Management Program (OCMP) is engaging in a natural hazards resilience planning  effort to foster resilient coastal communities and ecosystems in Douglas and Curry counties. These plans will identify and outline needs, goals, and priorities for projects to increase resilience to the impacts of storms, flooding, tsunami, climate change, and other natural hazards in coastal communities and areas.

WHY IS IT HAPPENING NOW?
Oregon's coastal population is highly vulnerable to natural hazard impacts. Planning efforts in recent years have sought to build local capacity in these communities for coastal resilience planning and implementation. With federal funding through the Inflation Reduction Act, the State of Oregon seeks to unify coastal resilience coordination and planning to bolster current planning efforts and strengthen partnerships for future coastal planning and management.

WHO IS INVOLVED?
This process will be led by coastal local organizations in partnership with municipal governments, state and federal agencies, Tribal Nations, OCMP technical staff and partners, and more. Efforts will be led by local entities with input from communities and other interested partners. OCMP will lead coordination throughout the project to engage communities, delineate partnerships, and facilitate public input.

COMMUNITY RESILIENCE PLANNING:

PHASE 1
Community engagement to assess and understand local resilience needs, assess vulnerabilities, and identify potential resilience activities.

PHASE 2
Assess vulnerabilities and evaluate benefits and costs of potential resilience activities. Outline potential adaptation strategies and feasibility of project site planning.

PHASE 3
Shape goals, priorities, and actions with community input. Identify partnerships and outline clear benchmarks and timelines to achieve goals and move adaptation actions forward.
